Testing Out a Three Day Cleanse

Pegged by curiosity, I decided to test out the Renew Life 3 Day Cleanse. This may or may not have anything to do with vacationing for 10 days which included lots of food and beer. I don’t generally agree with the idea of cleanses but again, curiosity. So I picked up a box of Renew Life 3 Day Cleanse and decided to test it out. The box reads “Total-Body Reset*” “Helps Eliminate Waste and Toxins*” “Reduce Bloating and Water Retention*” “Helps Restore Regularity*” “Promotes Digestive Wellness*”

Okay… interesting. Flip it over “Reset, refresh, and restore with 3-Day Cleanse, a quick, easy-to-use, advanced herbal cleanse and detox formula that works with your body’s natural metabolism to help eliminate waste and toxins, and relieve occasional bloating and constipation.* Get back to feeling like yourself again in just 3 days!*”

The use of asterisks is enough to insight quite a bit of doubt. But wait, read the ingredient list:

It seems a bit daunting with all of these ingredients. And I’ll admit a bit scary. So here’s the hard and fast version of what each of these ingredients are intended to do:

Milk Thistle Extract Seed: liver support

Taurine: liver support

Chlorella: toxic metal absorption

Burdock Extract: liver function, indigestion, and fatigue

Dandelion Extract: digestive system support

Horsetail Extract Herb: Kidney and bladder support

Red Clover Extract: indigestion

Turmeric Extract: digestive support

Wild Indigo Herb: immune support

Red Root Bark: digestive support

Cranberry Extract: kidney and bladder support

Hibiscus Flower: excretory system  support

Cape Aloe Leaf: laxative

Rhubarb Root: excretory system support

Marshmallow Root: excretory system support

Slippery Elm Bark: excretory system support

Triphala: digestive and excretory system support


There are some dietary guidelines to follow while doing this. I didn’t struggle with them because it basically outlined my normal diet. You can read them here. One other requirement is to drink half your body weight in oz of water. I easily drank way more than this because I became so thirsty during this cleanse that I was almost constantly drinking water.

So for three days, morning and night, I took these “cleansing” capsules.  The first point I should make is, these capsules are not going to make you a brand new person. They provide minor relief for those times when we all feel constipated, bloated, etc. That being said here a few things I’ve noticed:

  • your thirst will be insatiable; drink as much water as you can
  • you’re going to poop, a lot. (but not in a diarrhea sense, just that you’ll probably have 3 normal poops in a day)
  • you’re going to pee a lot, mostly because you are drinking so much water.

So aside from ridding your body of waste, the real MVP here is water. Moral of the story, just drink a lot of water. It’s amazing how you different you feel after just spending a day drinking more water. I drank nearly 2 liters of water everyday before doing this cleanse, which is quite a lot but drinking even more water, I can feel a difference.



3 Magazines to Read Today

Today’s post is dedicated to one of my favorite ways to read: magazines. Growing up Highlights and Teen Vogue played a big roll in my love of reading. Also, being a kid, I never got mail. So every month when my magazines would come, I was overjoyed to have mail that was just for me. That being said, magazines are a great reading material for my busy overloaded days now as an adult. On the bus, in-between classes (when I don’t have other work to do) and at night before bed. These are just a few that I find myself always going back to.

the gentlewoman: This is a biannual one that is all about strong, fresh and current women looking for inspiration, success and style. It’s a huge source of inspiration for me and this specific one was featuring Zadie Smith; I’m a huge fan.

bitch: This is my end-all and be-all of feminist media. This one is also inspiring but also educational. It inspires me to fight for equality for all people and always manages to give me fresh perspective on the world.

Apartamento: I might be so bold to say that this is my favorite magazine. Another biannual one that’s all about the ways people live; what their spaces mean and how they were formed or transformed. I always find myself thinking about the concept of art when reading this one. What truly defines creativity and in what ways does creative thinking change our world?

May Favorites

I really can’t believe that it’s nearly June! May has flown by but I am thankful for the warm Spring days, blooming lilacs, spinning around town with Harry and a few other bits. My Top Five Ways to Remedy a Negative Mood

 From time to time, we find ourselves in a negative mood. We might feel bad about a situation that happened in the past, are worrying about a future situation, or feeling down about ourselves, and the list goes on and on. I find that in the winter months, especially January, it is really easy to get stuck in a rut with negative moods and emotions. I am not an expert but I do have a few methods of mellowing my mood that usually do the trick for me and reset myself towards a more positive outlook. These methods are not time consuming and I can usually do them on the spot no matter where I am.

  1. Clean! Whether it’s organizing your planner, doing the dishes, cleaning out your e-mail’s inbox etc. I find that doing a little bit of cleaning in my space also helps to clear my mind. My personal favorite is to clean up the kitchen. As an added bonus I find that when I clean the kitchen, I am more willing to cook up something healthy and satisfying later on when I know that there aren’t dishes to deal with.
  2. Close your eyes. Whenever I feel bogged down with a negative thought or items on a to-do list I just take a few moments to close my eyes and try to quiet my mind. It’s something small that you can really do no matter where you are. After a few moments and a few deep breaths, I feel re-energized.
  3. A yoga pose, or two. Even if you don’t practice yoga or it’s not really your thing, taking a few minutes to practice a yoga pose that you really enjoy is more than enough to reset your mood. I usually like to lay back, perpendicular to a wall and lift my legs up onto the wall. This is a restorative pose that is often practiced in yoga as a way to rebalance yourself and take a different view of the world around you. To read more about this pose, click here.
  4. Make something healthy and tasty to eat. This one goes back to my number one. I think we can all agree that eating is very satisfying. I often grab a few pieces of dark chocolate or even just some lemon water. This is probably my favorite way to reset my mood. Lately, I’ve been making myself this lemon, turmeric drink and adding a bit of honey, it’s very comforting and when I combine this with number two, taking a few moments to savor the moment, I start to feel a lot better.
  5. Do something that makes you feel inspired. Whether its scrolling through your Instagram feed, Pinterest boards, reading a good book, doodling or exercising. Taking a few moments to do something like this lifts my mood into a much more motivated and optimistic one.

Friends They Are Jewels: A Day With Samantha Nitti


I invited my good friend and fellow blogger Samantha Nitti over for some winter-y festive fun this weekend. We share a mutual love for “heart-warming” food so we decided to bake up some chocolatey chunk ginger snaps (blog post to ensue!). She arrived at about 11am and we got to baking right away. It was a really great way to spend some time together especially because we are both big on cookies but I mean, who isn’t? The product was delicious chewy chocolatey ginger snaps, a cup of hot sipping chocolate, a warmed heart and a great time spent with a great friend. Samantha has some of the cutest personal style so we also voted to take outfit photos for our blogs as well. We ventured out in the cold to take a few snaps of our outfits so if you’re interested checkout the post on her blog just follow the link.

It’s a Mod Weekend: One Autumn Sunday

 In honor of the first “real” fall weekend Harry and I decided to have, what we like to call a “Fall Harvest Day.” After a very busy week we decided to take it down a notch and do all sorts of soul soothing fall festivities. We woke up and went for a quick run then ate breakfast and did homework. I’m telling you folks, it’s unavoidable. But things got real spicy after that because we ventured out to my favorite grocery store in Milwaukee called Outpost Natural Foods that is a locally owned cooperative that specializes in locally sourced organic produce. We picked up some dinner food items along with apple cider and star anise to make hot apple cider with. Then we went over to Bayview park for a walk on the trails. Although the trees have yet to show their true colors, the weather, crisp air and grey skies, was definitely screaming autumn. We’re glad we went because we saw a lot of dogs running around there.

We went back home because we had to do more homework and start dinner. Harry made his vegan chili which is so delicious, it’s heart warming and invokes every sense of autumn you could imagine. It’s made with vegan andouille sausage, sweet potato, potato, corn, kidney beans and lots of cumin. We ate it with a rosemary boule that we get at Outpost. I live for food that makes me feel the way that this dinner made me feel. We enjoyed it thoroughly with hot apple cider. I made a vegan pumpkin bread that was equally delicious and putting walnuts on top is the cherry on top. By the time we finished cooking our apartment was full of every autumn scent you could think of. We ate it while watching Disney’s Halloweentown because let’s face it, it’s one of the best halloween films ever and we watched it growing up. Don’t let me forget to mention that we listened to Chet Baker Sings all day because it embodies fall and winter weather for us and jazz might just be the best music genre out there.

It’s a Mod Weekend: Relax is Priority

This past weekend Harrison and I were lead down a seemingly unfamiliar path; a slow-paced relaxing weekend.  I feel as though the weekends starting from the very beginning of August on through last weekend have been filled with travels, chores and homework with little time for R&R. I know Harrison agrees and I feel like my motto of “R.I.P.: Relax is Priority” has escaped me. I’ll admit, I did feel inclined to add some to-do’s and chores to this weekend’s agenda but I managed to convince myself otherwise. Our weekend went a little something like this.

Friday night was spent traipsing around on the beach which proved to have many benefits. The weather was beautiful; the sun was still warm but the breeze was cool that correlated to a perfect crescendo of utter pleasantry. Also the cold sand between the toes and sound of the waves pulling towards and away from the shore; enough said. As an added bonus the sand made our feet very soft.

We left the beach behind and went home to make some homemade vegan pizza. Trader Joe’s makes a great pre-made (vegan!) garlic and herb pizza dough so all we had to do was roll out the dough, add the sauce and throw on lots of veggies. I know, I know eating pizza without cheese seems as though every bite of it would crush your very existence but in fact not. Leaving out the cheese makes room for all of the flavors of the veggies to meld into the sauce and the dough. It’s revolutionary but delicious. We also had sangria that I had prepared earlier in the day with a full bodied wine with spiced undertones, raspberries, apples, fresh rosemary, a cinnamon stick and sparkling pomegranate juice. If you want to make a great sangria all you need is time. Time to let the flavors mix. This results in a perfect unison of flavors. We put on Miles Davis Quintet Cookin’, enjoyed our pizza and sangria and took some deep breaths.

Saturday morning we went for brunch at Beans and Barely, one of our favorites. We were so hungry and the food looked delicious so there was no stopping to take a photo of our food but it wouldn’t have done it justice anyways. We shared a bowl of the vegetarian chili, I had vegan blueberry pancakes with a vegan veggie biscuit on the side and Harry had the vegan veggie biscuits with vegan gravy. Wow.

We left full-bellied and went for a little drive before heading to Washington Heights to go see the French feature film called ZouZou at the Times theatre as part of the Milwaukee Film Festival. We stopped at Valentine Coffee Roasters in Washington Heights for a cup of Bali Blue Moon coffee which has been our summertime favorite. It’s bold and dark with chocolatey undertones. This is the only location that Valentine has in the Milwaukee area, that we know of, but let us know if you know of any others on the East Side.

We saw ZouZou afterwards which was utterly hilarious, we laughed our socks off. As we’re both French speakers and francophiles, we thoroughly enjoyed it for its prime French humor and style. We both love films that place a lot of emphasis on character development over plot line and that is exactly what ZouZou offers.  Go see it.

That was overall the extent of our weekend, the rest was spent doing homework (it’s unavoidable), reading, writing and relaxing. What did you get up to this weekend?
